There are pro's and cons of living in any country...I have lived in 4 different countries and they all have their faults...just look at America

  • What pro's

Pro's living in dubai? Like that? tax free income? maybe, but thats about all I can fathom. Construction, racism, rude police, rude people, no orderly conduct such as queues, etc etc add to the cons list. Why would you move there?

  • hmmm

think well before u make a big decision. U as an expat will always be treated as an expat. U dont have much rights there, though they make you feel you do. Lets say u have a road accident and there is a local involved, trust me not much u can do there even if u do it right. Trying to get ur drivers license, hmmm, not easy to convert, u have to do classes and then exam which u will be doing for quite a while if u re not lucky. No fairness at all. Traffic, terrible. people-rude, weather in summer-- tooo hot.

Though its a fast growing country there s still so many things to be worked on

  • To Saira

    You said:

"but add to this a third-world country driving style ..."

I have to say that the above comment is a bit worrying. As a Canadian who has lived in London for the last 4 years, the White male English bus drivers drive like absolute maniacs. Clearly, poor driving is not a "third-world" phenomenon.

  • Love or hate Dubai

Moving to Dubai can be a great experience, just as if you had to go to france, or London etc. Not matter where you go forigner will face racism...I live in Canada and I see racism. By the way before you move to any middle-eastern country try to learn some general arabic to help with communication...it will make like a little easier. Good Luck.

  • Saira, Is there any perfect environment ?

Hi, I am 27 years old and have moved 25 times accross the world (Asia, Europe, US, Middle East...). This link relates to your dark vision of Dubai.... trust me when I say there are places you would not even survive ! My dear Saira, compare your situation to the one of people dying of hunger, living in war, surviving constant floods & rebuilding their homes each time, not having access to medical care.....and this list is short....
Maybe then you will write us how lucky you are !! happy))

  • Your right

Yep they are right...the glitz the glamour, the heat, the racism I lived with....1 thing drove me nuts..never ever being able to get a thing delivered to my home without it turning into a massive performance. If any one has the time, money and communication skill's one thing Dubai really needs is a new address and postage system.

  • Not glitz and glamour

Pros: sunshine (obviously am from the UK), tax free income, cheaper petrol, good for exploring the rest of the middle east and SE Asia, beach and swimming pool at the weekend

Cons: zero culture (the locals don't mix and they hate us being here), having to drive everywhere because the city is so un-pedestrian friendly, the shopping is crap and expensive (shopping heaven? - pah!), once you've trawled all the bars and clubs there's v little else to do, difficult to form meaningful relationships as most people have a short term plan (due to all the cons), constantly having to deal with people who don't understand a word you're saying and then messing up the simplest of tasks, traffic traffic traffic, stupid road system, bureaucracy and backward systems, arrogant locals ... and the list goes on.

  • Living in Dubai

Every day a new rule is imposed, first to clean bachelors and then to clean families, the new rule for families, you have two children in a family you should go for two rooms or leave dubai, stupid rule, stupid law makers, uneducated people. They compare their own country with European countries, When thousands of bachelors and Families have left now, everything from airport to citi taxis are waiting for passengers. thousands of newly built houses are unoccupied,

If this attitued continues everyone will go back to their homeland. They have to learn lessons..... before something really happens...

And talking about women in Burka's some are decent and disciplined, some have a bad habit of teasing even ladies passing beside in shopping malls,

Is this a Islamic country ?????

  • excellent - very true

very good and much needed article. people often are overwhelmed with the good up and up reports that they often forget about the true realities that are beneath the surface. one must take time to understand the core problems facing this city. that said, the development has been amazing. but times are different now and it is all ending. it will be interesting to see what happens...

  • arrogant locals

you need to have a lot of patience dealing with the arrogant, uneducated, racist, uncivilized, very lazy, rude, ill mannered and barbaric moronic locals who usually terrorizes any peaceful place you can go to.these stupid animals (though real animals are much nicer and can be domesticated) always think highly of themselves even though they can be the lowest kind of useless beings there is especially with their self praise personality and out of this world beliefs and customs.they think that everybody is their servant.that everybody is a goafer for this lazy idiots.no where in the world have i seen exaggerated laziness.even if they have to go to a small grocery store, they just honk their horns and give their grocery lists.why don't they just make everything here a drive through.maybe when they need to go to the toilet they need someone to hold their dick for them or wash their ass off if ever they know how to wash.rude children even below 1o years old is a norm.no wonder they grow up to be spoilt little bastards with nothing else to do but intimidate and be a big nuisance.the only people who are nice here are the expats themselves.but for sure when these f***ing assholes go to other countries they expect to be treated like royalties.hope they end up in those barbaric uncivilized places in the jungle where they belong and leave dubai to real people who has brains and compassion.

  • racist comments

Some of the comments on the blog are very RACIST. It si a different country and culture and there needs to be tolerance. Also it is a new city in its infancy so roads and transport are still developing. There are lazy and rude people all over the world including in the USA and UK, just because there are some in Dubai it does not mean that all UAE nationals should be classed as "animals" as someone posted in their thread above. Which country in the worl is perfect? Ok in the UK we have orderly queues but we also get ripped of with massive taxes. There are 138 nationalities of people in Dubai everywhere, it is not going to be like the UK and anyone who has these expectations needs their head checked. I am offended by some of the above comments, they are simply so racist as if white people are superior somehow. At least the muslims did not build their empire on slavery and by looting India. Remember that as a british muslim we get "go back to your own country" comment all the time, so that is what you are experiencing there sometimes. White people are not superior as a race sorry, but western prosperity is based on looting other countries in order to accumulate wealth. YOU are not better that us, sorry. We dont belong in the "jungle" as you put it, just because the arabs dont lick white peoples arses like some 3rd world countries do, you don't like it.

  • Concerned about dubai

My family and I are thinking of moving to Dubai with my husbands work as the company he works for has bought a company out there. Initially, I was excited and ready to give it a go, but having read all the messages on this forum, it seems there are more negative comments than there are positive and I am now not sure whether Dubai would be the place for us. We have 3 blonde, blue eyed kids, would they be picked on because of the colour of their skin?
I was also told that a wife has to get permission from her husband before she can do anything, is that true? I honestly do'nt think I could live like that. I have always made my own decisions, gone out when I want and say what I think. If we moved to Dubai, it sounds like I would have to keep my mouth permanently shut and walk 3 paces behind my husband. Is Dubai really not as westernised as I seem to think?

  • Racist comments?

Trying to defend your own kind? What a pity. Its like trying to defend Bin Laden with his mentality.I've never been in a country where LOCAL muslims boooed and ridiculed an advertisement showing Jesus Christ and when we watched a movie about Christians and Muslims, the LOCALS started clapping and jeering when the movie showed the Christians surrendering. What kind of disrespect is that especially in a movie house where people with mixed cultures and religions are watching. No wonder they think like Bin Laden as well. With Hatred and Jihad mentality. But if ever you do the same thing to them they will retaliate at once.I can't imagine what they can do since they have brains of a rocking horse and are undomesticated and untamed. How unfair isn't it.Not all muslims are like the LOCALS here. Most muslims who are not LOCALS are very nice and friendly. It is not dubai which has a problem. It is the local bastards who ruins it. kids, adults, men, women, all the locals have one common trait.they are all arrogant and lazy.they are an annoying, sick, scary people with the word "RESPECT FOR OTHERS" deleted from their useless brains.
