Getting a job in IT support

Working in IT in the UK

A job in IT support could be just for you if you are currently looking for work or hoping to pursue a journey down a different career route that holds plenty of promise.

Technology has come on leaps and bounds in just a few short years, with the majority of companies now relying on IT in some shape or form when running their business.

Will IT support suit me?

A corporate support engineer in the Systems Engineering team at FactSet has attempted to answer this question, stating to The Job Crowd : "I would say a keen interest in the subject area is definitely needed, as with any job. However, I would also say the willingness to learn and take advice from others is crucial, as this role is very ‘learn as you go’ orientated.”

What skills should I look to bring to the table?

Employers will be keen for you to have an impressive background in technical operations if you are to join their IT Support team. You should also be able to relay even the most complex of information to those not familiar with IT in a manner that is simple and easy to understand.

Those employed in a company’s IT Support team could also be required to speak with clients and customers when dealing with technological issues, so try and display your customer care and communication skills in a job interview.

How about required qualifications?

Job opportunities with a technical support team can be applied for so long as you have good GCSE grades in English, IT, Maths and Science.

Looking to stand out further from other applicants? Passing a computing course, such as a City & Guilds (E-Quals) IT Practitioners Certificate and Advanced Diploma, should help.
