How to get medications

Pharmacies

Each of the four Isreali healthcare funds runs its own pharmacies where you may purchase medication. Maccabi has over 600 pharmacy locations, followed by Clalit which has 400 locations.

Israel offers a basic basket of medications as part of its national health insurance policy. All health funds must provide these basic medications.

Additional medications are covered by supplemental insurance. Different funds do not offer the same set of additional medications. If you have special health concerns (e.g. you need cancer medication), research specific funds' medications if possible.

You must pay for all medications not covered by your policy. For a list of these medications, contact your health fund.

Purchasing medications

To purchase medications, you must go to your fund's pharmacy. These pharmacies sell basic drugs like cold medicine and birth control over the counter. You will need a doctor's prescription for other medications.
