Getting a landline in Ghana

Fixed phone lines

Having a fixed phone line is quite uncommon in Ghana. Companies such as Telenor or Vodafone Ghana provide land line services. The Ghanaian government has a 30% stake in Vodafone Ghana (formerly Ghana Telecom), which is the largest fixed line provider in the country.

Very few Ghanaians have a fixed line, as seen by the 1% penetration rate. It is possible to obtain a phone line subscription, though you may have to provide the following documents for the service provider to accept you as a customer:

  • Proof of identity, including photo proof;
  • Proof of address;
  • Foreigner’s Visa / Permit.

Vodafone bought Ghana Telecom in 2008, and provides the option of a fixed line everywhere throughout Ghana. To apply for a fixed line, there is an easy application form, which can be downloaded online .

The company offers many different packages, which can even include broadband internet. Vodafone offers both prepaid and postpaid options, the latter of which costs roughly between 0.06 and 0.13 GH¢ per minute (US$0.03 - $0.07; €0.02 - €0.05).

To make an international call, for example to Germany or the USA, from a landline will cost around 0.13 GH¢ for both peak and off peak tariffs.
