Spoilt for choice

From upmarket restaurants in the finest hotels to value-for-money establishments, Dubai boasts diverse dining options. “Spoilt for choice” is certainly an expression that would apply in this cosmopolitan city if you are searching for great food.

Dubai’s population is approximately 2.1 million and continues to grow. Add to this the millions of holidaymakers who head out to the city each year, plus all the students who live here, and there are a whole lot of mouths to feed. Thankfully this city has more than its fair share of restaurants and cafés that can accommodate even the fussiest of eaters.

Remember to look online for restaurant reviews, RoundMenu  is a great place to discover the amazing range of dining experiences on offer. Don’t forget to follow the locals, they will be more than happy to recommend some of their favourite restaurants and cafés in and around the city. They also know the best places to eat great food on a budget.

Heading upmarket

Where you dine in Dubai will probably depend on your budget as this city caters to a diversity of people from the ultra-rich to the student on a budget. Five-star restaurants can be found throughout the city, including those owned by celebrity chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa and Marco Pierre White. Many of these top eateries are located in the upmarket hotels. In many cases you will need to book to get a table and many have a dress code. Top quality cuisine is reflected in the high prices, but in many cases you are also paying for the ambiance, restaurant setting and even the chance to spot a few celebs while you dine.

Going for the budget options

Al Dhiyafah Road is famous for restaurants that can offer a good deal, and it’s where many Dubai residents go to indulge in Indian, Lebanese and Iranian cusine. There’s definitely a buzzing atmosphere along this area just off Jumeirah Road and restaurants such as Sidra Cafe & Restaurant  offer a great ambiance and good quality food. Not only that, it’s open until the small hours, so you don’t have to rush to finish your meal before closing time.

There are also health conscious and vegan meals available in the numerous restaurants in the form of couscous-based dishes and salad options. However, if you’re in the mood for a delicious mutton peshwari or a chicken korma head to the famous Ravi’s restaurant for the best value available.

Buying your own produce

If you want fresh produce but don’t wish to pay over the odds, you can find plenty in the local supermarkets to make your own meals (some regional recipes here ). For a more traditional experience head to the souks for a range of spices or low cost, exotic fruit and vegetables at wholesale prices. Both banks of Dubai Creek host several souks, the banks themselves being easy to reach by water taxi. Be sure that you visit during either early morning or late evening to get the freshest seafood available.
